4.304 Other Types of Leave
Jury Duty: Upon receiving a summons to report for Jury Duty, the employee should notify their immediate supervisor, and the employee shall be excused from employment for the day or days required while serving as a Juror in any court of the United States or the state of Tennessee; provided, that such employee’s responsibility for jury duty exceeds three (3) hours during the day for which the excuse is sought. During any excused absence, the employee shall be entitled to usual compensation received for employment. All employees that serve on Jury Duty – whether the employee is a teacher, a full-time or part-time salaried staff member, or an hourly employee – must submit a time-off request in the employee management portal.
Voting: Every employee entitled to vote in an election held in this state may be absent from employment on the day of the election for a reasonable period of time, not to exceed three (3) hours, necessary to vote during the time the polls are open in the county where the person is a resident. If the employee’s daily schedule begins three (3) or more hours after the opening of the polls or ends three (3) or more hours before the closing of the polls of the county where the employee is a resident, the employee may not take time off in order to participate in the voting process. All employees that leave during school hours to vote – whether the employee is a teacher, a full-time or part-time salaried staff member, or an hourly employee – must submit a time-off request in the employee management portal. Early voting is recommended.
Professional Leave: An employee may request time away from work for Professional Leave. The employee’s immediate supervisor and the school administrator should approve each Professional Leave at least ten workdays prior to beginning the leave. Upon return from Professional Leave, the employee will be required to submit a report, either orally or in writing, summarizing the professional study or activities undertaken.
Special Leave and Extenuating Circumstances: An employee may request special leave, up to 10 days, for extenuating circumstances. Each case is individual and requires consultation with the employee’s immediate supervisor, the school administrator, and depending on circumstances, the LCS School Board.
Bereavement Leave: When a death occurs in an employee's immediate family, all regular full-time employees may take up to three (3) days off with pay to attend the funeral or make funeral arrangements. The pay for time off will be prorated for a part-time employee if the funeral occurs on a scheduled workday. LCS may require verification of the need for bereavement leave.

Immediate family members are defined as an employee's spouse, parents, stepparents, sisters, brothers, children, stepchildren, grandparents, father-in-law, mother-in-law, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, or grandchild.
