    Board Policy: Student Goals

    1. Purpose

    The purpose of this policy is to support student growth by encouraging purposeful goal-setting aligned with the school’s mission, academic standards, and values. The School Board affirms that student goals promote responsibility, self-reflection, and continuous improvement.

    2. Scope

    This policy applies to all students enrolled at the school and may include academic, personal, social, and developmental goals as appropriate to the student’s age and program.

    3. Guiding Principles

    Student goals shall:
    • Be developmentally appropriate
    • Support academic progress and personal growth
    • Encourage student ownership of learning
    • Be reviewed periodically to support improvement

    4. Establishment of Student Goals

    The school shall provide opportunities for students to establish goals:
    • Independently and/or in collaboration with teachers, advisors, or counselors
    • At intervals determined by the administration (e.g., annually, by term, or by program)
    Goals may include, but are not limited to:
    • Academic achievement
    • Skill development
    • Personal responsibility and character development
    • College, career, or life readiness

    5. Role of School Staff

    Teachers, advisors, and counselors shall:
    • Support students in developing realistic and meaningful goals
    • Monitor progress toward goals as appropriate
    • Provide feedback and guidance to support student success

    6. Role of Students

    Students are encouraged to:
    • Take ownership of their goals
    • Engage in reflection and self-assessment
    • Make reasonable efforts to work toward achieving their stated goals

    7. Parent and Guardian Involvement

    Parents and guardians may be involved in the goal-setting process as appropriate, particularly for younger students or specialized programs. Communication regarding student goals shall be handled in accordance with school practices and confidentiality guidelines.

    8. Documentation and Review

    Student goals and progress may be documented using school-approved tools or systems. The administration shall determine:
    • The format for documentation
    • The frequency of review
    • How goal progress is communicated

    9. Individualized Considerations

    Student goals may be adapted to reflect:
    • Individual learning needs
    • Support plans or accommodations
    • Program-specific expectations

    10. Non-Evaluative Nature

    Student goals are intended to support growth and development and shall not, by themselves, be used as the sole basis for disciplinary action or academic evaluation unless otherwise specified by school policy.
