If used correctly, video can be a powerful learning tool. However, videos selected must meet strict educational guidelines, be approved in advance by the principal. Guidelines to assist in maximizing learning should be:
- Video watching must be for curricular instruction ONLY, never for “rewards” or “time-fillers”.
- The teacher is to have previewed the video and is prepared to make frequent interruptions. The teacher uses the video to manage classroom interactions, calling out questions, checking students’ understanding, and engaging them in dialogue with classmates.
- Selecting a video relative to the subject is critical. The material must be selected to allow maximum time on task; occasional “fast forwarding” may be necessary. The teacher should constantly be aware of bringing the thinking processes of students into the viewing experience.
- Video in the classroom is not a passive activity. Students must be actively involved. To sit and watch a program from beginning to end without interaction is typically inappropriate.
