Board Policy: Student Volunteers
1. Purpose
The purpose of this policy is to establish guidelines for student volunteer service that support the school’s mission while ensuring appropriate supervision, safety, and educational value. Student volunteer opportunities are intended to promote leadership, service, and community engagement.
2. Definition
A
student volunteer is a currently enrolled student who provides services to the school or to a school-sponsored program without financial compensation and outside of required coursework, unless otherwise approved by the administration.
3. Scope
This policy applies to all student volunteer activities conducted:
- On school property
- At school-sponsored events
- In school-approved off-campus programs
- During or outside regular school hours
4. Eligibility
To serve as a student volunteer, a student must:
- Be in good academic and behavioral standing
- Meet any age or grade-level requirements established by the school
- Receive approval from a designated school administrator
- Obtain parent or guardian consent when required
The school reserves the right to deny or revoke volunteer eligibility at any time.
5. Approval and Assignment
All student volunteer activities must be:
- Pre-approved by the school administration
- Assigned and supervised by a designated staff member
- Clearly defined in scope, responsibilities, and duration
Student volunteers may not independently initiate volunteer roles without school approval.
6. Supervision and Conduct
Student volunteers:
- Remain under the direct supervision of authorized school personnel
- Are expected to comply with all school policies, codes of conduct, and safety procedures
- Must conduct themselves in a professional, respectful, and responsible manner
Failure to meet conduct expectations may result in removal from volunteer service and/or disciplinary action.
7. Limitations
Student volunteers:
- Are not employees of the school
- May not replace or perform the duties of paid staff
- May not supervise other students unless expressly authorized and supervised
- May not administer discipline, provide medical care, or access confidential records
8. Safety and Risk Management
The school will take reasonable steps to ensure student volunteer activities are safe and age-appropriate. Student volunteers must:
- Follow all safety instructions and procedures
- Report hazards, injuries, or concerns immediately to their supervisor
Participation in certain activities may require additional permissions, training, or waivers.
9. Transportation
Unless otherwise approved, students are responsible for their own transportation to and from volunteer activities. The school does not assume responsibility for transportation arrangements unless expressly stated.
10. Recognition and Service Hours
Student volunteer service may be recognized through:
- Service hour documentation
- Certificates or acknowledgments
- School awards or graduation requirements, where applicable
Documentation requirements shall be established by the administration.
11. Termination of Volunteer Service
The school reserves the right to terminate a student’s volunteer service at any time if participation is no longer in the best interest of the student or the school.
